The teen was believed to have been abducted and was in extreme danger.
A 13-year-old Georgia girl who authorities feared had been abducted and placed in extreme danger has been found safe, bringing a tense multi-day search to a close.
According to CBS News, the AMBER Alert issued for Layla Alexis Nubian Carter was canceled Friday morning, one day after it was first put out.
The alert, known in Georgia as a Levi’s Call, went out Thursday after the teen was last seen at a residence on James Drive in Baxley around 1 a.m. According to reports, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation believed she had been taken by 32-year-old Giavannie Alexis Carter and warned she could be in danger, the kind of designation reserved for cases where investigators fear for a child’s immediate safety.
The teen was found in Jacksonville, Florida, and two people were taken into custody.
While the resolution is a welcome one, authorities have kept key details under wraps. Authorities noted that officials have not disclosed where Layla was found, nor have they confirmed whether Giavannie Alexis Carter has been taken into custody, leaving parts of the case unresolved even as the immediate concern for the girl’s safety has eased.
When the alert first went out, the GBI had circulated detailed descriptions of both individuals in a race to generate leads. Layla, who has blonde braided hair and brown eyes, stands about 5 feet 2 inches tall and was last seen wearing pajama bottoms and a t-shirt. Investigators had said the pair may have been traveling in a gray Jeep Renegade bearing the Georgia license plate SLU9322, and urged anyone with information to come forward quickly.
The swift cancellation of the alert suggests the public response and investigative work paid off in the critical early window that so often determines the outcome of these cases. AMBER Alerts are typically issued only when law enforcement has confirmed an abduction and believes a child faces a credible threat of harm, making the news of Layla’s safe recovery the outcome authorities had been racing toward.
For now, officials have signaled that the investigation remains ongoing, particularly regarding the suspect’s whereabouts and any potential charges. But the central worry that drove the urgent search, Layla’s safety, has been resolved with the best possible result.
