Florida football gravitates toward the Jon Sumrall era this fall. The Gators appear to be facing one dilemma already involving the quarterback room. It rises as one of two “question marks” a rival SEC coach shared Wednesday.

The anonymous coach spoke to Athlon Sports regarding the state of the Gators in this transitional period. While this individual acknowledged Sumrall has hired “extremely well” before the season, Florida still has two concerns on its hands.

“The question marks would still be along the offensive line and quarterback. They got (Aaron Philo) from Georgia Tech, who knows the system. But in this league, it’s about making critical throws on third down and in the red zone, and that’s yet to be seen,” the coach told Athlon.

Philo indeed arrives brand-new to the Gators via the College Football Transfer Portal. Plus he’s the first portal addition in Sumrall’s arrival to Gainesville. Philo sat behind last season’s Yellow Jackets star Haynes King but is competing for QB1 duties out the gate.

Florida still features College Football Recruiting pickup Tramell Jones Jr. The 2025 commit is one of the last Billy Napier recruits before his mid-season dismissal.

Jones himself attempted to distance himself in the race for QB1. He put on a show during Florida’s first spring game under the new head coach. Philo threw two interceptions that afternoon while Jones delivered a 75-yard strike to ignite the crowd inside The Swamp.

Addressing the Week 1 starter and fortifying the trenches appear to be the biggest tasks on hand for the former Tulane coach.
