Another Matt Campbell Comment Shows He's Much Different Than James Franklin

Former Penn State head coach James Franklin had his problems as a head coach. He also did some very good things, even things that weren't talked about enough.

I wholeheartedly disagree with the Penn State fans who have come out and suggested that he didn't do a good job in Happy Valley. 

If we're being honest, Franklin is one of the better coaches in Penn State history and helped the program during a time of need. However, it also felt like he left a lot of meat on the bones, as the Nittany Lions could have been better on both sides of the football and also won more games that mattered most.

Now, new head coach Matt Campbell finds himself in a somewhat similar situation to what Franklin did. This is a place where he's expected to win, but he also recognizes that there will be times when the Nittany Lions don't play the type of football they're hoping for. 

Last season, that happened against Oregon, and instead of coming together and rallying back, Franklin's team absolutely crumbled. Speaking to reporters at Big Ten media day, it doesn't sound like that's something we're going to have to worry about with Campbell.

"We're going to have to continue to grow at a rapid pace," he said, per ESPN. "We're going to have to experience success and failure, and how do we respond to that? That's ultimately where we'll be defined, and so I love the challenge of that. That's really been my focus — not so much about what is success or what is failure. It's man, what are the processes?"

Even the best teams in America year in and year out deal with some level of failure. Indiana won every single game last year, but there was a moment when it almost lost to Penn State. 

I think if we asked Curt Cignetti about the failures of that game, he would have said his team didn't worry about it too much and just came out and did what it had to do. The hope here is that Penn State can do similar things. The only way for us to find out is by seeing him coach and the team play.
