Make it two potential landing spots for Spartans head coach Jonathan Smith off the table today.

Stanford is reportedly going to hire Tavita Pritchard as the school’s next football head coach, according to ESPN insider Pete Thamel. This is notable as there was some speculation that current Michigan State head coach Jonathan Smith could be a target for the Cardinal head coaching gig should he be dismissed or departure the Spartans following the season.

Earlier in the day, it became apparent that Oregon State — Smith’s previous employer and alma mater — would hire Alabama co-offensive coordinator JaMarcus Shephard, removing the Beavers as a potential landing spot for Smith. Now, Stanford is also another high-level west coast job that is no longer on the market. Smith is from the California and there was some who thought Stanford could be a job that peaked his interest if he were to want to head back to the west coast.

Smith is in his second season as the Spartans head coach and it has not gone well so far, putting him firmly on the hot seat as we enter the final game of the season on Saturday against Maryland. Smith is 8-15 in his first two seasons as the head coach, and Michigan State is currently 3-8 overall and 0-8 in Big Ten play this year.

There has been plenty of chatter and speculation that a coaching change could becoming as soon as Sunday, but there has been no indication from Michigan State leadership and athletic director J Batt on what is next for Smith. We at least know now, that Stanford is also no longer an option for him.
