AP Top 25: Post-Week 1

With the completion of Week 1 on Monday night, we are fully into the 2026 college football season. Already this season, we have seen plenty of interesting storylines arise. What does the future hold for Dabo Swinney after Clemson got dogwalked by LSU? What the hell exactly happened in that Michigan-Western Michigan game? Might UNC be okay? Those are just some of the things that have come up after Weeks 0 and 1.

With Week 1 now in the books, the AP has returned with the latest version of their Top 25 poll. Let’s see where the chips landed this week.

Where is UNC?

Despite the win over TCU, the Tar Heels aren’t in the AP Top 25, nor did they receive any votes. They did get two in the Coaches Poll, though, so that’s something.

Biggest Winners

In terms of number of places jumped, LSU was this week’s winner with a three-spot jump after the blowout victory over Clemson. The Tigers are quite the feel good story, the team that everyone is rooting for, and — I just threw up in my mouth a little bit. Virginia was the only new team to jump up into the rankings, thanks to their Week 0 win over NC State. In the process, they replaced…

Biggest Losers

Technically, at time of writing, Michigan did officially win against Western Michigan. However, controversy remains over the clock in that game and the Wolverines getting one last chance to complete a Hail Mary and win, and the MAC is now formally appealing the result. However, AP voters are clearly treating the result like a loss, as they completely dropped the Wolverines out of the Top 25. The Coaches Poll kept them ranked because the Coaches Poll is weird (see above), but even with the win, UM looked pretty bad.
