It's no secret that Mark Pope has had trouble landing top recruits for the Kentucky Wildcats. Last year, it seemed like Caleb Wilson was a lock, but then he was gone. This year, Christian Collins was in a similar situation. Over and over, five star recruits flirt with the Wildcats, but end up going somewhere else.
Recently, there was some buzz on social media about Wildcats recruiting being hurt by none other than the fans themselves. An account on X posted that both Mark Pope and former coach John Calipari had expressed that Big Blue Nation's negativity had cost them recruits.
Whether or not this is true, it has sparked debate among fans. Obviously, Kentucky fans are passionate, both when things are good, and when they're not. Social media makes it even more accessible for fans to express frustration with players, and sometimes it does go overboard.
Does it cost the Cats in recruiting?
It has to be noted that negative fans are not unique to Kentucky. They are everywhere, and they're often a loud minority. Still, it can certainly be mentally taxing to be deal with so much negativity. Players have said that they hear it.
Does it cost them players, though? It seems unlikely. It's likely something that other coaches use as a tool, but good players will still go to good programs. Pope's struggles with recruiting are more likely due to him being an inexperienced coach, and with the program trying to figure out how it wants to construct its teams.
In a perfect world, fans wouldn't become toxic to players, and wouldn't have the ability to directly show their frustration to them. Unfortunately, it's the world we live in, and if it is affecting recruiting, then fans will have to take accountability, and adjust behaviors.
