Wednesday was National Signing Day in college football, which only a few years ago was a big deal on the recruiting calendar. Not anymore, since the vast majority of high school and junior college prospects sign during the early period in December.
That was the case for Arizona, which two months ago signed 20 prep and JUCO recruits. Two of those ended up asking out of their agreements including 4-star running back Brandon Smith, who ended up signing with Oregon.
On Wednesday, the only player the UA announced as signing was former Louisville punter Carter Schwartz, one of more than 20 transfers added to the roster this offseason from the NCAA transfer portal.
The 6-foot-4, 225-pound Schwartz was signed as a replacement for ex-Washington State kicker/punter Ryan Harris, who will not be joining the team for 2026.
Schwartz, who will have two seasons of eligibility remaining, averaged 41.1 yards on 30 career punts with Louisville. He appeared in 18 games for the Cardinals.
Arizona has an opening at punter with Isaac Lovison’s graduation. The Wildcats also added Australian punter Chase Ridley, and the two are expected to compete during spring ball for the starting job.
The UA had been expected to sign JUCO cornerback Brandon Holmes, who committed last month, but Holmes ended up signing with Utah. They won’t be lacking in new defensive backs, though, as between prep and transfer signings the Wildcats added eight other DBs.
