Arizona State won the Big 12 in 2024 and made it into the College Football Playoff – and was bounced in the first round. Texas A&M was deep in the SEC title chase last year and made it into the College Football Playoff – and was bounced in the first round.
These are two programs used to success now, and neither fan base is crazy to dream of getting back into the tournament. However, both have brutal schedules ahead, and one loss this week should be enough to end any realistic playoff hopes. (Yes, either one can still win its respective conference championship, but even though it’s early, that appears unlikely.)

Why Arizona State Will Win
Yeah, it was supposed to be a wipeout, but it was still the exact type of performance needed from the new parts of the Sun Devil offense.
Kentucky transfer quarterback Cutter Boley was terrific. The running game showed off all the great backs, and everyone got a chance to get the timing down. Arizona State has playmakers on both sides of the ball, and like all Kenny Dillingham teams, effort is never an issue.
This is a program that doesn’t blink when playing big games on the road – it was the only team to beat Texas Tech last year in the regular season.
Why Texas A&M Will Win
So much for worrying about reloading the defense.
Quarterback Marcel Reed and running back Rueben Owens looked in midseason form against Missouri State. The defense that had to come up with several new parts wasn’t really a massive concern, but it did have to fill in some gaps.
Not only did the Aggies pitch a shutout last week, but they allowed just four first downs. Arizona State isn’t Missouri State, but it’ll have to be ready for a defensive slugfest.

On a day when the world will be talking about Ohio State vs Texas, and with Oklahoma vs Michigan going on when this is happening, this has a great chance to be the best game of the three.
Both teams will be tough in key moments, there will be mood swings, and just when it seems like Texas A&M has this in hand, Arizona State will rally back late. The Aggies will pull this off, but they’ll get pushed – the final score will look worse than the game.
