Arkansas basketball coach John Calipari has shared his thoughts on the Southeastern Conference’s new eligibility rules. College basketball is still facing uncertainty as players look for ways to play extra seasons.
Calipari, one of the SEC’s most well-known coaches since joining Arkansas, said he supports the conference’s approach in a talk with Andy Katz. His remarks come as the eligibility case involving former Missouri player Mark Mitchell and others is still unfolding.
“I like what the SEC is doing,” Calipari said, according to Katz. “If a player doesn’t like what the SEC is doing, what? Go to another league.”

Katz noted that coaches who do not agree with the conference’s rules could also choose to leave the SEC. Calipari answered strongly.
“Just do it. Make it hard. Do it right,” the Arkansas coach said.
The SEC recently adopted rules that prevent athletes who have declared for the professional draft or signed pro contracts from returning to play in the conference. This policy has sparked debate, especially as legal fights continue over eligibility for players from the 2022 high school class.
Mitchell is one of the players affected by the eligibility dispute. Even though a court said he could try for another season, the SEC’s new policy has raised more questions about whether he can play.
For Arkansas and Calipari, this situation shows how fast college basketball is changing. With legal issues still ongoing, it is not yet clear how the SEC’s eligibility rules will ultimately affect matters.
