Arkansas vs Texas Prediction: The Old Southwest Showdown Matters

It was 34 years ago when Texas and Arkansas were battling in the old Southwest Conference, and they’ve only played seven times since then.

It used to be a fun rivalry game, and for people of a certain age, there’s something about this matchup that’s still magical.

They played last year – Texas won 20-10 – but this time, it’s a showdown that could make the Hogs’ season.

They’re on an eight-game losing streak, but they’re on an insane run of close losses, with four of the last five decided by three points or fewer.

If Arkansas wins, that’s the big moment of the season, and the Texas campaign suffers yet another gut punch.

The Longhorns got whacked by Georgia 35-10, and that’s it. They’re not going to the College Football Playoff, and the team that was supposed to win the national title is now shooting to put a dent in Texas A&M next week.

But first, beat Arkansas for the first time since 2008.

Why Arkansas Will Win

It’s insane how many close games the Hogs have played.

No, the defense still isn’t stopping anyone – LSU stopped itself last week – but the offense keeps on producing.

So what has gone wrong in all of these tough fights? Turnovers. The Hogs have two or more giveaways in five of the last seven games, but the Texas defense doesn’t force mistakes.

The Hogs make teams open it up a bit, and as Texas showed in last week’s loss to Georgia, along with not having a running game, it has a hard time getting the O to explode. However …

Why Texas Will Win

Texas offense, this is the time to slam your foot on the gas and get everything working fine before dealing with Texas A&M.

The Arkansas run defense isn’t quite as awful lately, but if you ever wanted to see if the ground game works, Longhorns, hand it off 40 times and enjoy the over 200 yards of production.

There’s no problem with the Hog passing game, but everything starts with the ground attack that averages close to six yards per carry and was only held under five yards per pop against Auburn.

Texas has only allowed more than three yards per carry twice, and …

Arkansas vs Texas Prediction, Betting Lines

Those two times when teams ran relatively well on the Texas D were in the losses to Georgia and Florida.

The Arkansas offense will do just fine, but after all of the struggles against the Bulldogs last week,

Texas will be far sharper, Arch Manning will throw for over 250 yards, and then it’s time to get ready for the Aggies to come to town.
