As portal transfers blur the lines, Spartans beat themselves in rivalry game

Somewhere on Fresno State’s sideline Saturday night sat a guy who used to wear Spartan blue.
Jairus Satele spent two years at San Jose State before hopping into the transfer portal to the school his father once played defensive line for. Satele told 247Sports back in 2024 that the move was “basically like a tribute” to his dad. Two years later, he’s just another example of how thin the line between rival and roommate has become in this age of the transfer portal.
That’s the back story of this rivalry now. It’s not so much about who won or who still knows why it matters, though the 26-10 loss Saturday night certainly hurts for the boys in blue of today.
A rivalry that has to be re-taught every year
The Valley Trophy used to pass down through a roster the way a family story does, told and retold until the new guys felt it before they ever played in it. That doesn’t happen automatically anymore. For SJSU, portal churn means half the players lining up Saturday spent last season somewhere else entirely and a fair number of them might be somewhere else next year too. Satele grew up in a house full of Fresno State memorabilia before he ever put on the red. For most of this SJSU roster, the rivalry is something they’re told about in fall camp, not something they carry from Pop Warner onward.
That gap showed up in the moments that decide these games.
San Jose State’s defense played disciplined, physical football all night. It held Fresno State to 354 total yards and forced a missed field goal. But discipline that shows up on defense and vanishes on offense and special teams isn’t really institutional. It’s situational. And Saturday night, the situations kept going the wrong way.
Spartan QB Luke Weaver threw four interceptions and owned it afterward, saying flatly it came down to “bad decisions, bad football, bad spots.” Spartan running back Jabari Bates broke a 66-yard touchdown run in the second quarter that would have flipped the game, but was wiped out by an illegal formation call before the snap ever happened. Neither mistake is really about talent. Both are about the small, repeatable habits that a program with more continuity tends to iron out by game four.
Discipline is the one thing you can’t transfer in
Fresno State had its own sloppy night, 10 penalties worth of it and still walked out 26-10 winners. That’s the uncomfortable part of this comparison. The Bulldogs somehow have Jeff Tedford-built continuity on their staff and a roster that has been through this particular Saturday night more than once. San Jose State is still assembling both.
Anthony Ivey, one of the many proven weapons on this offense, caught seven passes for 150 yards and said afterward the number on the scoreboard is the only one that matters to him, whether that’s zero catches or eight. That’s a veteran’s answer. It’s not clear how many of his teammates would give it the same way or feel the loss as he explained it.
In the end, none of it is a talent problem. It’s a time problem. You can recruit speed and length out of the portal in a single signing period. You cannot recruit the years it takes for players to understand what beating Fresno State is actually supposed to feel like or the great discomfort it should cause them to hand a rival free points.
San Jose State’s job now is to build it in players who arrived with no reason to feel it at all, starting with a bye week that has nothing to do with scheme and everything to do with identity, as they begin conference play in Hawaii…another big rival.
