Alex Golesh’s tenure as head coach of the Auburn Tigers has had a challenging start. He was named head coach this offseason after recording a 23-15 record over three seasons with the South Florida Bulls.
He was immediately tasked with replacing 37 players after they decided to enter the transfer portal. This included star wide receivers Cam Coleman, Eric Singleton, and Malcolm Simmons, as well as the entire quarterback room, with Jackson Arnold, Ashton Daniels and Deuce Knight all entering the portal.
The Tigers have signed 39 players from the transfer portal as Golesh is beginning to establish his presence on the recruiting trail. This includes building momentum with a top quarterback prospect for the class of 2027.
The Tigers are making progress in securing a commitment from four-star prospect Israel Abram, according to Rivals’ Steve Wiltfong.
“I just think talking to Coach Golesh over time, getting to know him and his family I feel like that’s a type of man I want to be coached under,” Abrams told Wiltfong. “He has the same values my dad has so that obviously translates over and that’s someone you want to play for.”
He is ranked as the No. 3 quarterback prospect in the 2027 class and the No. 22 overall prospect by ESPN. Other top contenders include Tennessee, Purdue, Kentucky, Iowa, Northwestern and Florida State.
Golesh inherited one of the most challenging situations in college football this offseason, taking over an Auburn program that saw massive roster turnover almost immediately after his arrival. This forced Golesh to attack the transfer portal aggressively while laying the groundwork for the future.
That future may hinge on recruiting at quarterback, and Auburn’s traction with Abram is an encouraging sign. Landing him would represent a major early win for Golesh and help stabilize the program at the most important position on the field.
While Auburn’s rebuild is still in its early stages, momentum on the recruiting trail suggests Golesh’s vision is resonating. If that carries over into commitments like Abram’s, the Tigers could be positioning themselves for a quicker turnaround than many expected.
