Two more Auburn Tigers have declared their intentions to find opportunities elsewhere as the transfer portal window inches closer.

Reports from Justin Hokanson of Rivals show that wide receiver Horatio Fields and defensive back Amon Lane-Ganus are expected to enter the transfer portal once the window opens on Jan. 2.

Fields transferred to Auburn from Wake Forest last offseason and appeared in four games before breaking his foot ahead of Auburn’s Sept. 27 game at Texas A&M, which ultimately ended his season. Before his injury, Fields caught 12 passes for 106 yards and a touchdown. His best game came in Auburn’s Week 2 game against Ball State, when he reeled in six passes for 51 yards and a score. He recorded multiple catches in every game he played this season.

Lane-Ganus signed with Auburn during the 2024 recruiting cycle as a four-star cornerback from Moody High School in metro Birmingham and was the No. 23 recruit from Alabama. He was never granted the opportunity for extended playing time as he failed to record a stat in his two seasons on the Plains.

Auburn head football coach Alex Golesh spoke with the media on Monday about an array of topics, including roster retention. He provided an open look at his approach and philosophy ahead of next month’s opening.

“Priority would be the retention of the guys that you feel like fit, the guys you feel like can help, and ultimately, guys that want to be here. We’re still a couple of weeks away from truly knowing if there is a match there of (both) we want this guy here and he wants to be here. We’re trying to get to that decision as fast as we possibly can to know if there is a hole there or is there not. We’re a couple of weeks away from that.  The intent coming in, and I said this a week ago, is not to run guys out of here but to make sure we find that guys that, again, want to be here, we want them here, and that match can happen. Then you don’t have a hole. Every situation’s absolutely different. It’s the depth in the room, has the young man played or not, are you retaining him off potential, are they wanting to stay off of giving us a chance. Each spot is completely different. So to say how we’re totally attacking the portal today, I could give you some thoughts that I would probably want to keep private, and those thoughts will drastically change in the next three weeks.”

Eight players have declared their intentions to enter the transfer portal in January, with the headliners being quarterback Jackson Arnold and running back Damari Alston.
