Auburn football receives final 'letter grade' from USA TODAY Sports

Auburn football extended its losing season streak to five seasons in 2025 by finishing with a 5-7 record, and just one win in SEC play.
The season resulted in Auburn firing its head coach, Hugh Freeze, and a mass exodus of players from its roster to the transfer portal or the NFL draft. It is no wonder that USA TODAY Sports has given the Tigers a less-than-satisfactory final letter grade for their 2025 performance.
Paul Myerberg, known for his weekly "re-rank" feature from USA TODAY Sports, handed each team a final "letter grade" following the conclusion of the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. Auburn received a "D+." Auburn joins UAB, Colorado, Kansas State, Liberty, ULM, Michigan State, Nevada, North Carolina, Penn State, San Jose State, Virginia Tech, and Wisconsin in the category. Out of those 13 programs, five fired their head coaches during the 2025 season.
Auburn began the season with a 3-0 record against nonconference teams before going on a four-game losing streak, falling to all SEC teams. The Tigers hopped back on track by defeating Arkansas on Oct. 25, but would end the season by winning just one of its final four games. Alex Golesh was hired to replace Hugh Freeze, and notable players such as Cam Coleman, Malcolm Simmons, Ashton Daniels, and Amaris Williams entered the transfer portal. However, Auburn has restocked its offensive line and defensive backfield and has replaced its quarterback with Byrum Brown, who finished last season with 4,166 yards and 42 touchdowns.
