With the Auburn football program now led by head coach Alex Golesh, he is looking to bring the excitement he brought to the University of South Florida and restore the feeling within the college football powerhouse. As Golesh is looking to turn around the Auburn football team, he would speak on comparisons that are being thrown around to the Indiana Hoosiers head coach, Curt Cignetti.

When Cignetti went from James Madison to Indiana, he retained a lot of players who were on the Hoosiers, while bringing in familiar faces to him in the form of players and coaches. In two years, Cignetti brought a national title to Indiana last season, as people are pointing to Golesh doing the same thing.

Besides 57 percent of the Tigers’ roster being retained, Golesh is also bringing in coaches and players he’s familiar with, like USF quarterback Byrum Brown, as the coach speaks about the comparisons.

“What those guys did in that two-year run that they’ve had so far is unprecedented,” Golesh said to ESPN’s Paul Finebaum. This can be, and I’m okay if that’s the expectation, like you come to Auburn, you come to this conference because you want real expectations. So I’m okay with that. If that’s the floor of where we get to in two years, I’d be happy. I think you’d be happy. We may be talking about Auburn more often.”

Alex Golesh on the “comfort” with the Auburn football team

Continuing on with the comparisons made between Cignetti and Indiana to Golesh coming over to Auburn, it could lead to fans having championship expectations. For Golesh, though, bringing in familiar faces no doubt brings “comfort.”

“We’ve got some skill guys that are in their third year, it gives you some continuity offensively. Defensively, gives you some guys that are big pieces in the sense of just culture. I think more than anything, schematically or even football-wise, it’s those guys sitting in the locker room.”

It remains to be seen if Golesh meets the same two-year timeline with Auburn that Cignetti accomplished with Indiana, but improvement is wanted from the fanbase.
