Auburn legend gives head coach Alex Golesh a strong vote of confidence

One of the Auburn great linebackers believes Alex Golesh is the coach who can turn around the football program.

Last week, former linebacker Takeo Spikes was a guest on the "Jim Rome Podcast," where he was asked if Golesh was the right guy for the Auburn program.

"I think Coach Golesh is the right guy," Spikes said. "He understands the process. He has command of the process. He has command of the room and, more than anything, he has command of the plan. And he is a proven product even going back when he was offensive coordinator at Tennessee and then go to South Florida to be able to create this opportunity for him to come to Auburn."

Golesh is a coach who is self-made and had to work his way up. That goes back to when his family came to the United States after leaving Russia. He worked his way up as a high school assistant coach in Ohio and then a student assistant for the Buckeyes. When he was the offensive coordinator at Tennessee, the Volunteers had one of the best offenses in the country. In 2022, Tennessee led college football in yards per game at 525.5 and was fifth in passing with 326.1 yards per game behind quarterback Hendon Hooker.

He continued that success at South Florida over his three seasons with a 23-15 record as the Bulls' head coach. South Florida posted the No. 3 offense in college football last season, averaging 488.7 yards per game. Auburn fans are hopeful that success will translate to the Plains with Byrum Brown and many of South Florida's offensive players following Golesh to the team.

Spikes knows what winning at Auburn looks like. He was part of the Tigers team that reached their first SEC Championship Game in 1997 when they fell to Tennessee 30-29. Spikes led Auburn with 136 tackles and was an All-American. He would be drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 1998 NFL Draft as the No. 13 pick in the first round. He would also play for the Buffalo Bills, Philadelphia Eagles, San Francisco 49ers, and San Diego Chargers during his 15-year career.
