Ashton Daniels will get his first start for Auburn against Kentucky on Saturday, head coach Hugh Freeze told the team Friday, according to On3's Chris Low.
The former five-star quarterback takes over for Jackson Arnold, who started last week’s game against Arkansas but was benched after throwing a pick-six. Daniels entered late in the second quarter and led Auburn to a 33-24 victory.
Freeze says he still believes in Arnold but wants to give Daniels a chance to lead the offense. He also noted that Auburn’s offensive struggles aren’t entirely Arnold’s fault, though the Tigers’ production has been inconsistent throughout the season.
The Oklahoma transfer went 7-of-12 for 73 yards, one touchdown and one interception against Arkansas. For the season, he is averaging 157.9 passing yards per game, which is the lowest mark among SEC starting quarterbacks.
Auburn meets Kentucky on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET on the SEC Network.
