Fall camp is upon us, and with that, depth charts will be polished up going into the season. The running back room has some conversation around it, but not for the starting job, as that seems locked up by senior Jeremiah Cobb; instead, it is for the backup role to Cobb. Many expected it to be Bryson Washington, the junior transfer from Baylor.
Auburn football head coach Alex Golesh says sophomore running back Omar Mabson II is 'on a mission to win a job' and that he's showing them why he should play.
The praise for Mabson has grown a lot this offseason. Golesh has added to that with his words on Mabson's commitment to working to get better.
"He doesn't say a whole lot, but he's on a mission to win a job," Golesh said via Justin Ferguson on X. "He's pushed others in that room to either get on his level, or they're gonna struggle…He keeps showing us why he should play."
Last season, Mabson got only 16 carries as a true freshman out of Auburn High and recorded 71 yards on the ground. He scored one touchdown, which came in the double overtime loss to Missouri.
Washington finished his sophomore season with 788 yards rushing and eight rushing touchdowns; the catch, though, is that head coach Alex Golesh spoke on Washington wasn't where they wanted him in the spring. It's opened the door for hometown sophomore Omar Mabson II to continue making himself a way to that backup role.
Overall, the running back is a stacked room that has many options from senior Tae Medows, sophomore Alvin Henderson, sophomore Nykahi Davenport, Washington, Mabson, and Cobb. It would not be surprising to see a rotation of these guys throughout the season as Golesh utilizes the depth.
