MANHATTAN — Austin Romaine said goodbye to Kansas State football, but he will remain in the Big 12 Conference.
The Wildcats’ standout linebacker posted on social media, “Thank you, K-State. Excited for my next chapter!!” along with a graphic showing that he was committing to Texas Tech.
“The past month has given me a lot of time to reflect with my family on my journey at Kansas State,” Romaine wrote. “I had no idea how much it would shape me — the work put in, the lessons learned and the pride I felt wearing purple.
“I’m especially grateful to Coach Klieman and the staff for taking a chance on me and giving me my opportunity at the Power 4 level. That belief changed my path and gave me the chance to compete and grow at the highest level.”
Romaine had 162 total tackles over the last two seasons, including 66 this past injury-shortened season. The Hillsboro, Missouri, native was voted to the Big 12’s second team in 2024 and 2025, while also earning All-Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year honorable mention in 2023.
“To my teammates, coaches and the Wildcat community — thank you for the support, the trust and the standards that you held me to every day,” Romaine said. “Kansas State will always be part of my story, and I’ll carry what I learned with me moving forward.”
Kansas State has been busy targeting linebackers since the transfer portal opened on Jan. 2.
Romaine was the second K-State defender in the transfer portal to announce their commitment to a new school on Jan. 4, joining safety Qua Moss, who committed to Tennessee.
Kansas State and Texas Tech are not scheduled to meet in the 2026 regular season.
