AZTECS HOLD BRUINS SCORELESS IN THE FIRST HALF, BUT STRUGGLE LATER ON IN 28-10 LOSS
PAC-12 GOES 3-7 IN WEEK TWO. BOISE STATE REBOUNDS WITH WIN OVER MEMPHIS, FRESNO STATE AND COLORADO STATE ROLL TO BIG WINS
San Diego State took on UCLA in the Rose Bowl on Saturday, with hopes to build upon their previous week’s victory. They played awesome defense in the first half, with punts and an interception highlighting the efforts. Jayden Denegal was an uninspired 6/17 passing for only 45 yards with a score and an interception. Lucky Sutton led the way with 81 yards on 19 carries, as the Aztecs struggled to move the ball against the Bruins. The Aztecs only had a field goal until they scored a touchdown on a Denegal to Jackson Ford 19 yard score to make it 21-10. UCLA Running Back Wayne Night accounted for three rushing touchdowns of 8, 7, and 36 yards on the evening. The Aztecs struggled all evening to sustain drives. A previous offensive onslaught was put into hibernation in Pasadena on Saturday afternoon. The Aztecs (1-1) return home on Saturday night to take on the James Madison Dukes, themselves an 87-3 victor over hapless Wagner. The Aztecs were able to generate only 189 yards on offense, with 144 on the ground. The aerial assault never took flight. UCLA (2-0) was more balanced with 214 yards rushing and 191 through the air for a total of 365 yards. The Aztecs struggled to convert on third down, going 2/12. The Bruin defense was up to the task in shutting down any Aztec hope of an upset. UCLA stays home again next week to take on Purdue in a Big-10 conference game. Yes, that still sounds strange to equate UCLA in the Big-10.
Around the Pac-12
Oregon State held tough against #13 ranked Texas Tech at home, dropping 35-24. The Beavers outgained the Red Raiders 472-352, but struggled to gain any momentum on the ground.
Utah State surprised everyone leading Washington until late in the game, before succumbing 16-14 in an extremely respectable game. Both teams punted six times. Two Husky fourth quarter field goals put it out of reach for the pesky Aggies, rebounding from an FCS loss last week to Idaho State.
Washington State was on the road against Power 4 Kansas State. Kansas State led early and continued to build upon their lead as Washington State struggled to gain any traction on offense. Quarterback Caden Pinnick could only manage 65 yards on 9/20 passing while accumulating 166 total yards. The Cougars are back home next week for their home opener against Duquesne next Saturday.
Texas State had momentum, but crashed down the stretch in the fourth quarter as they lost to their rivals UTSA in the I-35 Classic. The Bobcats allowed the Roadrunners to convert two fourth down plays late in the fourth and UTSA scored on a Brandon High Jr. score to go ahead and hold on. Bobcat Quarterback Brad Jackson was 17/30 passing for 192 yards, a score and two touchdowns. He missed his receivers on several key drives. The win for UTSA marks their 100th program win.
Boise State bounced back from their loss against Oregon last week with a convincing 38-20 win over the Memphis Tigers. Running back Dylan Riley ran for 206 yards. Fellow back Spider Gaines added 93 yards as the Broncos rolled up 578 yards on offense.
Colorado State continued humming along with a 58-24 trouncing of FCS Southern Utah. Quarterback Hauss Hejny might be the breakout star this season in the conference as he was 18/30 passing for 325 yards and four touchdown passes. He also contributed 85 yards on the ground including a 75 yard touchdown run. They finished with 678 yards of offense as they completely controlled Southern Utah.
In the Valley, Fresno State gave Sacramento State a continued rude welcome to FBS play as they jumped out to a 39-0 lead early in the third quarter. The Hornets could only manage three points and 262 yards against a Fresno State defense, intent on bouncing back from the previous week loss at USC. Quarterback Jayden Mandal was 23/26 for 316 yards and two scores. Running Back Bryson Donelson carried for 102 yards and three touchdowns while receivers Ezekiel Avit and Josiah Freeman both topped the 100 yard mark in receptions. Fresno State travels to San Jose State in a PaC-12/MWC crossover game next saturday.
