The momentum surrounding Kentucky’s 2027 recruiting class continued to surge Sunday afternoon as Canton (Ga.) Sequoyah linebacker Drew Williams announced his commitment to the Wildcats following his official visit to Lexington. We said the dominoes were going to fall today, and now the Cats have gone two for two this afternoon following a big official visit weekend. In-state defensive lineman Malachi Brown kicked off the Sunday for the Cats with his commitment.
Williams arrived on campus as one of Kentucky’s top defensive priorities and departed as the newest member of Will Stein’s rapidly ascending recruiting class.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound linebacker chose Kentucky over a loaded finalist group that included Oregon,Florida, and LSU. His decision caps a recruitment that generated more than 40 scholarship offers and further reinforces Kentucky’s growing presence in the fertile recruiting grounds of Georgia.
For the Wildcats, this commitment is about far more than adding another talented defender. It is another statement that Kentucky is winning legitimate recruiting battles against some of college football’s biggest brands.
A major reason why? Defensive coordinator Jay Bateman. From the moment Kentucky extended an offer in January, Bateman made Williams feel like a cornerstone piece of the Wildcats’ future. While others chased the talented Georgia product, Kentucky built a relationship. The Wildcats identified him early, prioritized him relentlessly, and ultimately closed the deal when it mattered most. The result is one of the most productive rising linebackers in the Southeast joining Big Blue Nation.
Williams put together a monster junior season at Sequoyah High School, earning First Team All-Region honors after recording the following:
- 138 tackles
- 15 tackles for loss
- 6 sacks
- 1 forced fumble
- 23 quarterback pressures
Those numbers jump off the page, but the film may be even more impressive. Williams plays with the kind of motor that coaches dream about. He diagnoses plays quickly, attacks downhill with violence, and consistently arrives at the football with bad intentions. Whether he is filling a gap against the run, blitzing off the edge, or chasing plays sideline-to-sideline, his instincts and pursuit stand out immediately. What makes Williams such an intriguing addition, however, is his versatility.
At 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds, he possesses the frame to continue adding weight while maintaining the athleticism that allows him to impact the game in multiple ways. He can operate as a traditional inside linebacker, play in space, rush the passer in pressure packages, or serve as a hybrid defender in Bateman’s scheme.
Simply put, he is the type of modern linebacker defenses covet. Kentucky fans should be particularly excited about his fit within Bateman’s aggressive defensive philosophy. The Wildcats want defenders who can create chaos, attack gaps, and play with relentless effort. Williams checks every one of those boxes. His production reflects a player who doesn’t wait for plays to come to him—he goes and creates them.
Just as importantly, Williams continues a trend that has become evident under Kentucky’s current recruiting approach: identifying tough, high-motor football players whose best football is still ahead of them. Those are the prospects that often outperform recruiting rankings once they arrive on campus.
The Wildcats have emphasized building from the trenches and strengthening the second level of their defense throughout the 2027 cycle. Williams gives Kentucky another cornerstone piece in that effort and provides immediate momentum coming off another successful official visit weekend. For a program looking to elevate its roster talent and compete consistently in the SEC, wins like this matter. Kentucky didn’t simply land a linebacker Sunday.
The Wildcats landed one of Georgia’s most productive defenders, beat out national powers to do it, and added another foundational piece to what is quickly becoming one of the strongest recruiting classes in the country, and once again, Jay Bateman proved why he’s become one of Kentucky’s most valuable recruiters. Williams makes the 20th commitment for Stein’s 2027 recruiting haul. The Cats continue to push towards a top 10 class. They currently hold the No. 12 recruiting class as of right now per 247 Sports. We expect this to surge easily in the next few days with some more key commits on the way to a Top 10 class.
