It appears everyone has a different opinion on who should replace Mike Tomlin as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, including the legendary Ben Roethlisberger, who revealed his “ideal” pick for the role.
On a recent episode of the Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger podcast, the former Steelers quarterback didn’t waste time naming the “perfect” candidate to fill Pittsburgh’s vacancy — Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman.
“Do you go even a veteran like a Kirby Smart? Is there someone there? I think the ideal, perfect hire would be Marcus Freeman from Notre Dame,” Roethlisberger said. “Young guy, new, fresh, someone that the guys would respect and stuff, but he is not leaving Notre Dame, let’s just be honest. I think guys respect him and just from talking to [Jerome Bettis] a lot about how much he really likes that guy. But I think that’s probably a pipe dream.”
Since taking over as head coach for Notre Dame in 2021, Freeman has recorded an impressive 43-12 record, along with a 5-2 bowl record. He earned the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award, the George Munger Award, and the Paul “Bear” Bryant Award in 2024 after leading Notre Dame to its first National Title Game in 12 years.
Roethlisberger hit the nail right on the head regarding the unlikelihood that Freeman would ever leave Notre Dame, but he’d arguably be the best candidate to replace Tomlin if he ever decided to leave college football.
