‘Best ball skills of any receiver we’ve seen’: Why Oregon commit Dakota Guerrant earned 5th star

Dakota Guerrant (Sam Spiegelman, Rivals)

Five prospects were named a five-star for the first time on Monday when Rivals updated its player recruiting rankings — the Rivals300 — for the 2027 cycle. One of those new additions was Harper Woods (Mich.) wide receiver Dakota Guerrant.

Long considered one of the best pass-catchers in the nation, Guerrant has taken that leap from top-100 recruit to the next tier. He’s now Rivals’ No. 22 prospect, No. 3 receiver and No. 1 player in Michigan.

It’s a well-earned bump for the Oregon commit. He had a monster junior season, hauling in 55 receptions, turning them into 1,074 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also plays defensive back and had 40 tackles, three interceptions and nine pass-breakups in 2025.

Guerrant has continued to ball out during the offseason, looking the part alongside myriad other blue-chippers on the camp circuit. He’ll now enter his senior year as a five-star, and earlier this week, Rivals’ Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power explained why he received the big stock bump.

“Dakota Guerrant, in my opinion, has the best ball skills of any receiver we’ve seen to this point in the cycle — and we’ve had the chance to see the vast majority of the top receivers in 2027 in-person on the camp circuit. The more and more we saw from the group and the more clarity we got within the position, we felt like Guerrant came out looking better and better,” Power told Rivals’ Josh Newberg.

Beyond passing the eye test, Guerrant also looks like someone who’s only going to get better upon getting inside a college strength and conditioning room. Power says that the future Duck wouldn’t look out of place right now, however.

“He’s a physically-built receiver at over 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds, he looks like he could get on a college football field right now and play well right now and hold up physically. He’s dominant at the catch point, can pick up yards after the catch, a guy who just has a really well-rounded game. The more we see from him the more we like him, and when we were looking at this ranking in total, we felt like he deserved to be in that top tier of receivers.”

Oregon beat Michigan and others for Guerrant

There were no shortage of suitors in Guerrant’s recruitment. For a while, it looked like Michigan was going to be able to keep him from leaving the home state. Dan Lanning and the Ducks had other ideas.

Guerrant committed during official visit season on June 16. He’s now the top-ranked commit in the class, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all major recruiting media companies.

“The coaching staff is filled with great people and people that want you to be the best,” Guerrant told Rivals’ Steve Wiltfong about his decision. “They’re elite at everything.”

Guerrant is a part of an elite receiver class that’s set to head to Eugene. Oregon also holds commitments from top-50 WR Xavier Sabb, top-100 athlete Tae Walden Jr. and three-star WR Malachi Garlington. The Ducks’ class currently checks in at No. 3 nationally and No. 1 in the Big Ten, per the Rivals Industry Team Recruiting Rankings.
