LOS ANGELES — The atmosphere in Eugene, Oregon, is ready this Saturday to host the college football game of the week. A clash between No. 7 Oregon Ducks and No. 15 USC Trojans will take place, in which a life-or-death effort for the College Football Playoff (CFP) will be on the line.
The Ducks have a 71.9% chance to win and are favored by 10.5 points – a lot of money in the spread has moved toward Oregon. This is a must-win situation for Oregon; if they lose, earning a playoff spot will become hard for them.
Oregon is being considered one of the best teams in the country, ranking third in ESPN’s Football Power Index. Recently, they flipped three-star wide receiver Hudson Lewis from Utah to fill a niche role in the 2026 class.
The “Saturday Morning Inspection College Football Show” host Nick Rudman explained the recipe behind head coach Dan Lanning's success:
“When you nail the top flight recruits, when you crush it early, you can go looking for bargain, I say bargain loosely, you can go look for these, sort of not five-star players that fill key roles, and you can add them to your roster, and that's what pushes you to championships, and that's what Dan Lanning and Oregon have done this entire, really last 12 months or so, when it comes to the recruiting, they nail the top flight guys, they crush it,” Rudman said.
“That's what NFL teams do… the good teams, they go looking in the fourth, fifth round, or the lower level free agents for key guys and key roles, that's what the Chiefs do, that the Eagles do, that the Patriots, when they have their dynasty, that's what they did, that's what Dan Lanning is doing here with the Oregon Ducks,” he added.
Can the Trojans’ passing attack overcome this fearsome Oregon defense? This becomes the defining question, because the Ducks have America’s best secondary, they rank number one in yards allowed per pass (4.9) and pass yards allowed per game (119.4). If Oregon’s back end neutralizes USC’s air attack, then the game’s fate will swing back toward the trenches.
On3 analysts J.D. Pickell believes that the Trojans have a sneaky advantage up front; they rank top 15 in sack rate, and they are preparing a defensive formula that is “be annoying against Dante Moore.” Their goal will be to rattle the Oregon QB, speed up his decisions, and force turnovers, just like Indiana did to beat Oregon.
Can the Trojans win? Yes, the Trojans can defeat the No. 7 Ducks, pulling off a massive upset. QB Jayden Maiava has made significant progress this season and is dangerous with his feet, as well as accurate in his passing, which his elite receivers, Makai Lemon and Ja’Kobi Lane, will support him. So, while USC has upset potential, the game is expected to be decided in a fierce struggle, as football pundits believe. It will be a battle between the Ducks’ (9-1) defense and the Trojans’ (8-2) offense, both fighting with full force to keep their shiny CFP dreams alive.
