Michigan football’s calendar is now in one of the busiest times of the year with its bowl game looming on Dec. 31 against Texas in Orlando and a vast coaching search underway for Sherrone Moore’s replacement.

Biff Poggi has taken the program’s reins leading up to the bowl game and has taken several opportunities to share his thoughts on the state of Michigan’s program moving forward.

Poggi had a mouthful to say about the transfer portal on Monday including what he and the next coach most focus on if the Wolverines are to become a more successful program in the coming years.

He also vowed to fix the “messy” situation that has unfolded in Ann Arbor following the Moore scandal.

Poggi Speaks Out on Transfer Portal Lies

Poggi took aim at what he called lies to recruits and players on college football‘s transfer portal focused landscape.

He spoke about what he feels Michigan must do to maintain a strong standing with players after its reputation took a hit due to the Moore scandal.

“There’s one thing you have to do with players and their families, the minute they think you’re lying to them, it’s over,” Poggi said in a press conference.

“That’s the reason why the portal is so big, and it’s getting bigger every year and it will be bigger next year and the year after that and the year after that. Because kids are told things and their families are told things that aren’t true,” Poggi added.

“So, if I don’t know an answer that is asked me from a kid or a parent, I’ll tell ’em I don’t know and I’ll do my best to find out.

“If I do know, I tell it to ’em whether they want to hear it or not.”

Poggi’s “good cop” routine has played well with Wolverines fans since Moore left town, disgraced from a scandal involving his former mistress and University Michigan employee Paige Shiver.

He is considered a candidate for the head coaching job and to remain with the football team in some capacity in 2026.

Poggi Comments on ‘Messy’ Issues in Ann Arbor

Poggi commented on the “messy” issues that have surfaced in Ann Arbor.

“Let’s face it, the kids who have been here four or five years with their families, there’s been something kind of every year that’s been…Messy,” Poggi said.

“And I didn’t think of that and one of the moms brought that up, you know, like, every year there’s been some issue, one of the moms brought that up,” Poggi added.

“Every year there’s been some issue, what are you gonna say, ‘No?'” Poggi continued.

“You’re gonna say, ‘Yeah,’ and we’re gonna fix it. Whoever the next guy in this seat is, his mandate is gonna be to fix it, and you know, I feel very strongly about that, you gotta be honest with them, and you can’t, if you discount what they say to you, this recruiting class and the kids on the team will be playing somewhere else,” Poggi added.

The Wolverines interim coach said he spends an “enormous” amount of time talking to players and their parents in hopes of smoothing over such issues.
