Jun. 30—It was announced today that Blooming Prairie and Hayfield will be playing as a cooperative in football for the next two years, at least.

Both teams were short on numbers last year; Hayfield finished 1-8 and Blooming Prairie 2-7.

Hayfield Superintendent Gregg Slaathaug sent a release explaining the situation:

"I wanted to share an important update regarding our football program for the upcoming school year. After many thoughtful discussions, Hayfield and Blooming Prairie have agreed to enter into a cooperative agreement for football for students in grades 7-12.

"I know this is a significant change, and I also know how much pride both communities have in their football traditions. Please know that this decision was not made quickly or lightly. Throughout this process, one priority remained above everything else — our students.

"The number one reason for this cooperative agreement is student safety. As participation numbers continue to fluctuate, it is our responsibility to provide a safe environment where students can compete, develop and enjoy the game of football. Just as important, we want every student-athlete to be a part of a positive, competitive and rewarding experience.

"I also want our community to know that this cooperative agreement has the full support of both school districts. Both superintendents, both activities directors and both head football coaches believe this is the best opportunity for our student-athletes and the future of both football programs.

"Many details are still being finalized and additional information will be shared with families as those decisions are made. At this time, we can share that the cooperative agreement will include grades 7-12. Practices and games will be hosted in both communities, uniforms will be shared and each school will continue to celebrate its own homecoming traditions. Our team will compete as the Blooming Prairie/Hayfield football team.

"This cooperative agreement will remain in place for a minimum of two years. Both school districts have also agreed that if participation numbers increase to a point where both Hayfield and Blooming Prairie can safely and successfully support their own independent football programs, we are committed to returning to separate teams. That decision, however, must be in the best interest of both the schools and their student-athletes. This agreement is about providing the best opportunity for students today while remaining flexible for the future.

"While change can sometimes be difficult, it also brings new opportunities. We are excited for our students to build new friendships, compete together and represent both communities with pride. We ask our parents, fans and community members to welcome our Blooming Prairie neighbors and support all of our student-athletes as they begin this new chapter together.

"Our commitment remains the same as it always has — to do what is in the best interest of our students. We truly believe this cooperative agreement gives our football players the safest environment and the best opportunity to succeed both on and off the field.

"Thank you for your continued support of Hayfield Community Schools. We look forward to an exciting football season and will continue to communicate additional information as plans are finalized."
