Blue Hens step into ACC country, get demolished by Deamon Deacons

Wake Forest scored almost at will and walloped Delaware 52-14 in a nonconference football game Nov. 22 at Allegacy Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

The ACC’s Demon Deacons were much too formidable for FBS-level rookie Delaware, which watched Wake Forest score on its first five possessions and nine of 11 overall, with Delaware intercepting two passes.

The damage featured Robby Ashford’s 79- and 93-yard touchdown passes for Wake.

Delaware (5-6) closes the regular season Nov. 29 against Conference USA rival Texas-El Paso at Delaware Stadium at 1 p.m.

Wake Forest (8-3), which led 35-7 at halftime, has won three straight.

The Blue Hens were outgained 577-300 in total yards.

Delaware quarterback Nick Minicucci completed 21 of 30 passes for 70 yards and a touchdown to Viron Ellison Jr. Ellison had 34 rushing yards and 60 receiving yards.

Braden Streeter replaced Minicucci in the third quarter and passed 25 yards to Max Patterson for a touchdown with 1:59 left. Streeter was 11-for-17 for 93 yards.

Wake Forest took a 7-0 lead on its first series, driving 84 yards on 15 plays. Demond Claiborne scored from the 1. The series featured a fourth-and-3 conversion on a short pass at the UD 38.

That was followed by a 9-play, 59-yard march that finished with Ty Clark’s 13-yard run up the middle and included a fourth-and-1 conversion from the 50. A 2-point conversion made it 15-0.

Delaware then scored on its third series when Minicucci threw a short pass to Ellison and the running back broke several tackles en route to a 43-yard TD with 12:47 left in the second period. Wake Forest had not allowed a defensive touchdown its two previous games against Virginia and North Carolina.

Connor Calvert’s 44-yard field goal then extended Wake’s lead to 18-7.

The Demon Deacons made it 4-for-4 when they scored again on their next series, which began with Chris Barnes’ 78-yard run to the UD 10. Three plays later, Ashford scored on a 4-yard keeper as the lead became 25-7.

Delaware then fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Calvert converted again from 44 yards to make it 28-7.

The Blue Hens then got their first defensive stop on K.T. Seay’s interception. But they gave the football back on Sean Wilson’s fumble after a catch at the Wake 21.

Ashford then threw a 79-yard TD pass to Carlos Herndandez on the next play as Wake took command 35-7 going into halftime. The Hens were outgained 360 yards to 112 in the first half.

The Deamon Deacons didn’t let up as the second half commenced, driving 80 yards and going up 42-7 after Ashford’s 19-yard TD pass to Sterling Berkhalter.

Ashford and Hernandez then hooked up again on a 93-yard TD as Wake went up 49-7 with 3:37 left in the third quarter.

The reliable Connor then converted from 47 yards in the fourth period.
