Brendan Sorsby taking indefinite leave of absence from Texas Tech

The Texas Tech Athletics Department made a stunning announcement about quarterback Brendan Sorsby on Monday.

According to a press release, the Texas Tech Athletics Department has announced that Sorsby will be taking an indefinite leave of absence from the program.

The reason for his leave of absence? Sorsby will seek treatment for a gambling addiction.

“The Texas Tech Athletics Department and Brendan Sorsby announced today that Sorsby will take an immediate indefinite leave of absence from the football program to enter a residential treatment program for a gambling addiction,” the press release stated.

“We love Brendan and support his decision to seek professional help,” Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire said. “Taking this step requires courage, and our primary focus is on him as a person. Our program is behind Brendan as he prioritizes his health.”

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports that Sorsby is currently under investigation by the NCAA for allegedly making “thousands of online bets on a variety of sports via a gambling app.”

Thamel adds that could jeopardize his eligibility with Texas Tech.

“Sorsby’s decision to seek treatment for gambling addiction, according to sources, came in the wake of the discovery of Sorsby making thousands of online bets on a variety of sports via a gambling app, which jeopardizes his eligibility with Texas Tech,” Thamel says.

“The NCAA is investigating Sorsby’s gambling, according to sources, as the organization forbids athletes from betting on both college and pro sports,” he added.

Thamel’s report also says that Sorsby bet on Indiana football while redshirting with the school back in 2022.

“According to sources, Sorsby bet on Indiana football while redshirting for the Hoosiers as a true freshman in 2022, a season in which he played in a single game as a reserve,” Thamel says. “The bets in 2022, according to sources, were on Indiana to win and none came in a game in which Sorsby appeared.”

Sorsby’s gambling has “not drawn the attention of law enforcement,” Thamel adds, and he hasn’t “been linked to anyone attempting to influence the outcome of a game.”

There is no timetable for Sorsby’s return to the team and his issue is being dealt with as a “mental health issue,” Thamel’s report says.

Sorsby is one of the top returning players in the country.

He spent the previous two years at Cincinnati. Prior to playing for the Bearcats, Sorsby was at Indiana for two seasons.

In 2025, Sorsby threw for 2,800 yards and 27 touchdowns to five interceptions for Cincinnati, leading the team to a 7-5 record.

Sorsby transferred to Texas Tech earlier this year after being one of the most sought-after transfer portal players.

He is widely viewed as one of the biggest stars of college football for this upcoming season and was set to bring in around $5 million at Texas Tech, ESPN has previously reported.
