Memphis football quarterback Brendon Lewis is expected to start for the Tigers on Thanksgiving Day against Navy, coach Ryan Silverfield said Nov. 22.
“He’s done a great job of taking care of himself,” Silverfield said. “And the expectation is that he’ll be our starter for this game.”
If Lewis starts against the Midshipmen as expected, it’ll mean he started every game for the Tigers (8-3, 4-3 American Conference) during the regular season. He’s battled injuries throughout the season and has been listed as questionable for three of Memphis’ last four games, but he’s ultimately managed to make every start.
Lewis initially left the Oct. 18 game against UAB with an ankle injury and missed most of the second half. Two weeks later, he left the Oct. 31 game against Rice after appearing to aggravate the injury in the fourth quarter. A week after that, he left Memphis’ game against Tulane after taking a big hit in the fourth quarter.
A week later against ECU on Nov. 15, he left the Tigers’ game against ECU on several occasions but returned repeatedly and finished the game. Memphis has extra time off between that game and the matchup with Navy on Nov. 27 (6:30 p.m., ESPN).
“We all know since the injury has occurred, he hasn’t been full speed,” Silverfield said. “And I think that’s a lot of guys in college football, so I’m not sitting here saying it’s just about him and our roster. A lot of guys are chipped up this time of year, as they should be with the amount of physicality and the amount of banging and the way he plays the game.”
The Tigers have struggled over the last month, first losing to the Blazers and then dropping back-to-back games against Tulane and ECU. Memphis entered the month as the top-ranked team in the Group of Five, but the Tigers are out of the College Football Playoff race entering the final week of the regular season.
Brendon Lewis stats
Lewis has thrown for 2,395 yards to go with 13 touchdowns and six interceptions this season. He’s also rushed for 582 yards and nine touchdowns.
