The Oklahoma Sooners have the best recruiting class for 2027. They currently sit at No. 1 in the country with twenty commits for the next year’s freshmen group. OU is set to bring in 1 five-star recruit, OL Cooper Hackett, and 11 other four-star players.
Because their 2027 season is nearing completion, the Sooners have shifted some of their focus to 2028. Recently, they hosted a visit for a top-50 player in the 2028 recruiting class. Damarion Mays is the No. 39 player in 2028 and greatly enjoyed his visit to Norman, Oklahoma.
“When I got there, they made me feel at home,” Mays said. “Me and Coach Emmett were communicating, talking, then I spoke to the head coach. When I was talking to Coach Venables, he was giving me a lot of resources and advice. Then we went out to the field, and it was real competitive. Off rip.”
The Sooners currently have no commitments in their 2028 recruiting class. However, it is still very early in the cycle. OU did have a pledge from the No. 1 running back in 2028, Micah Rhodes. He recently decommitted after former RB coach DeMarco Murray left for a new job in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs. Now, OU is back to looking for its first commitment in the 2028 recruiting class.
Oklahoma could be in a battle with Ohio State for Mays in 2028
The Sooners are currently projected to have the second-best odds of landing Mays, according to On3 at 13%, with Ohio State leading at 27%. The Sooners have an advantage in being relatively close to Mays. The Texas high school standout has built a strong connection with wide receiver coach Emmett Jones, who also has ties to Texas high school football.
“Nah, it was great,” Mays said before chuckling a bit. “Me and coach, I want to say we were talking for about 45 minutes straight. Yeah, he was talking, but a lot of knowledge that he gave me. And then, he gave me that coin for if I want to commit. That was cool.”
Mays is a 6’3 receiver with great speed. explosiveness, separation, and hands. On his tape, what stands out most is how good and willing of a blocker he is in the run game. Those are the types of attributes that offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle looks for.
Landing Mays in the 2028 recruiting cycle would be huge.
