The Oklahoma Sooners entered the 2026 college football season with a ton of momentum and excitement. The Sooners made the College Football Playoff in 2025 for the first time since 2019. They also returned many key contributors from that team.
Oklahoma started the season ranked No. 10, but in three weeks, the momentum seems to have vanished. Oklahoma dominated its season opener, before losing 17-10 to the Michigan Wolverines and beating the New Mexico Lobos 14-6 on Saturday. This sluggish start has dropped the Sooners out of the top-25 in the AP poll.
Head coach Brent Venables addressed the feeling of the locker room after the narrow win over New Mexico.
"It doesn't feel like you lost in the locker room," Venables said. "There's nobody overly excited. You know, a lot of guys are exhausted, both physically and mentally. Then a lot of guys who know that we've got work to do. We've got to play better. We've got to coach better."
It's a telling assessment for a team that is technically 2-1. The Sooners aren't celebrating the win as if everything is fine because they know the problems that showed up against Michigan haven't completely disappeared.
The defense has largely kept Oklahoma afloat, while the offense continues to search for consistency. The Sooners have scored just 24 combined points in their last two games after putting up 51 in the opener. The Sooners' offensive staff has a lot to figure out and not much time to do so.
Oklahoma takes on the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs on the road this week, then faces the No. 1 Texas Longhorns in Dallas. If the Sooners can't figure out their offensive woes fast, the once-promising season could become a disappointment fast.
