The Illinois Fighting Illini offense has taken center stage this offseason with its bevy of weapons, talented transfers and history of success. 

Meanwhile, the Bobby Hauck-led defense has been toiling in relative obscurity, in preparation for what Hauck and head coach Bret Bielema hope will be a renaissance season. 

The Fighting Illini secondary is mostly set with top tier defensive backs Matthew Bailey and Xavier Scott leading the way, but there is still much work to be done on defense with UAB headed to town on Sept. 3. 

On Thursday, Bielema detailed the rise of a surprising defender, a physical specimen from Macomb, Michigan who is turning heads. 

Michigan Native Impressing at Linebacker 

Bielema spoke about the rise of former three-star recruit Mason Muragin of Macomb, Michigan, who has been a standout in spring and summer team activities.

"Probably the surprise of even the spring slash summer to this fall is Mason Muragin, he's playing at an extremely high level," Bielema said in a press conference Thursday according to reporter Glenn Kinley. 

"I was giving him heat the other day because I pulled him off a special teams unit, because I just think he has a chance, if Daniel (Brown) is not gonna be there, he'll be our starter going into week one," Bielema revealed.

The possibility of the Fighting Illini needing Muragin to play more snaps has led to Bielema shifting and changing his special teams responsibilities in hopes of preserving his energy, strength and health going into 2026.

"And so I've kinda limited what he can do special teams-wise," Bielema said.

"And I know that frustrates him, cuz he wants to be out there, so I go, 'You went that I was trying to get on every special team to now I'm trying to get off to try and limit him." 

Muragin's Size Adds New Dimension 

Muragin stands 6-feet-4 inches tall and weighs 250 pounds, giving him a gargantuan frame for his linebacker position that could make life miserable on opposing blockers this season.

Now a senior and Communications major, Marugin played high school football for Michigan powerhouse Warren De La Salle and has had plenty of time to develop ahead of what he hopes will be his best college football season. 

A two-time Academic All-Big Ten Team member, Muragin missed the 2024 season due to injury and only played in two games last season. 

He's spent a ton of time in the weight room and on the practice field, and will soon have a chance to unleash years of pent-up energy — a scenario that could play out well for the Fighting Illini on both defense and special teams.

Illinois doesn't figure to have a top tier defense this year, but it should have a solid-to-very-good one.

The development, and performances, of relative unknowns and unheralded players like Muragin could go a long way toward determining how well Hauck's defense plays this season, and how far the Illini go in the Big Ten and beyond.
