Illinois football is scheduled to open its season on Sept. 3 against the UAB Blazers at Gies Memorial Stadium, a game most pundits expect the Fighting Illini to win with relative ease.

Behind the scenes at Fighting Illini practices, coach Bret Bielema and his staff are hard at work crossing the t's and dotting the i's, fully knowing that they will get the Blazers' best shot in week one.

The Fighting Illini have won two straight bowl games against strong SEC opponents under Bielema's watch but it's going to take a stronger, more well rounded effort to compete for Big Ten and national championships in Champaign, Ill. 

According to Bielema, the 2026 Fighting Illini appear to have something in spades that has been lacking in previous seasons: balance on offense, along with a promising defense and a special teams unit that has potential playmakers busy honing their craft. 

Weapons, Balance on Offense

The Fighting Illini relied heavily on former star running back Chase Brown from 2021-2022 as the ex-Western Michigan Broncos recruit racked up over 2,600 yards in two consecutive seasons before being drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals. 

Beilema used Brown's exciting history with the Fighting Illini to make a positive point about his 2026 offensive unit. 

"I would say offensively I think we have guys kinda for the first time…Our second year we were heavy Chase Brown," Bielema said.

"Now I think we have offensive linemen, you have tight ends, you have wide receivers, you have running backs, now our depth, we'd like to have better but it definitely shows we have guys at really all the skill positions that can make plays," he continued according to reporter Glenn Kinley on X.  

The Fighting Illini offense will rely heavily on transfers Katin Houser and Jayshon Platt in the passing game while the running game will likely fall on the shoulders of program holdovers Ca'Lil Valentine and Aidan Laughery. 

The strength-in-numbers approach is expected to pay big dividends by the time each player learns their role and joins forces to create a more balanced attack on offense. 

Defense Making Strides Under Hauck

Defense enters the season as a bit of a wild card with former Montana Grizzlies head coach Bobby Hauck hired to take over this offseason.

Hauck has the mentality of a head coach but has put in a scheme that is structurally familiar according to coach Bielema.  

"Defensively it's a very fun defense to be around, structurally it's very similar to what we were a year ago it just plays a lot different, so I think that part is fun," Bielema added. 

Punter Jack Gray from Adelaide, Australia also got a shout-out from the Illinois head coach. 

"Jack our new punter from Australia corked a few off yesterday so it's pretty awesome," the coach added.

"I like the weapons, I like the way our coaches are responding to our players and the way our players are responding to the coaches, but yeah I think you want to play complementary football at Illinois to win big games, you gotta be able to have people that can affect all three phases and I think we have that," he concluded.

Illinois is expected to be favored in its first three games against UAB, Duke and Southern Illinois before a road trip to Ohio State on Sept. 26 that looks daunting but could be the biggest win of the Bielema era if everything falls into place.
