WINTER GARDEN, Fla. — Michigan football is in a bit of a transitional period while preparing to play a game at the same time. The Wolverines made it down to Orlando for the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl, where they’ll play Texas, but simultaneously, they’re also mentally preparing to meet their new coach later on Saturday.

Michigan hired Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham for the vacancy after Sherrone Moore’s firing, and he’ll make it to Florida sometime on Saturday. He’ll meet with the team once he arrives, and have his official introduction to the media (and world) on Sunday morning.

Of all the players on the team that Whittingham would most want to retain, it has to be quarterback Bryce Underwood.

Underwood met with the media before practice on Saturday, and while he was clear that he’s focused on Texas, he’s also interested to learn more about his new head coach.

“Very excited to figure out what kind of guy he is,” Underwood said. “I don't really know too much about him. I'm just excited to figure out what kind of guy he is.”

Aware that he doesn’t have to stay in Ann Arbor if there isn’t a mutual fit, Underwood says that after he asks Whittingham some questions, which he says he’ll come up with ‘when I walk up to him,’ he’ll discuss what he’s learned with his family and teammates.

Though he was relatively noncommittal, having seen more about Whittingham’s tenure in Salt Lake City, Underwood appears to be rather intrigued by the hire.

“I seen his resume a little earlier today, actually,” Underwood said. “So I'm just excited to ask him a few questions, get to that point, and things like that.”

Whittingham is set to be announced at 11 a.m. EST in Orlando, Florida, with the introductory press conference set to be broadcast live on Big Ten Network. The Cheez-It Citrus Bowl will be on December 31 at Camping World Stadium at 3 p.m. EST and will be broadcast on ESPN.
