Sophomore quarterback Bryce Underwood, the former No. 1 overall recruit in the 2025 class and one of the faces of Michigan football, has already embraced that reality. Although he's preparing for just his second season in Ann Arbor, Underwood made it clear that facing the Buckeyes is unlike any other game on Michigan's schedule, offering a candid perspective that Wolverines fans are sure to appreciate.

Bryce Underwood Explains Why Ohio State Is Different

Shared by Yahoo Sports; during an interview with NBC Sports, Underwood was asked what separates the annual matchup with Ohio State from every other game.

His answer showed just how quickly he's come to understand the rivalry.

"Now me being in it, I see why it goes as deep as it goes."

Underwood also referred to Ohio State as "The Team Down South," embracing one of Michigan's long-standing traditions when discussing its biggest rival.

While coaches often preach that every week is the same, Underwood acknowledged that the emotions surrounding Michigan-Ohio State simply make it different.

It's a rivalry where seasons can be defined by a single afternoon in late November.

Michigan Expects Underwood to Lead the Next Chapter

Underwood arrived in Ann Arbor carrying enormous expectations.

The Belleville, Michigan, native was the consensus No. 1 player in the 2025 recruiting class before flipping his commitment from LSU to Michigan in one of the biggest recruiting victories in recent program history.

As a true freshman in 2025, Underwood started all 13 games and finished with 2,428 passing yards, 11 touchdown passes and six rushing touchdowns while helping the Wolverines to a 9-4 record. The experience gave him an early introduction to what it means to be Michigan's starting quarterback.

Now entering the 2026 season under new head coach Kyle Whittingham, Underwood is expected to take another significant step as one of college football's brightest young stars.

With Michigan seeking to return to Big Ten title contention and earn a College Football Playoff berth, much of the program's success will rest on the sophomore quarterback's shoulders.

If Underwood's latest comments are any indication, he already understands one of the biggest responsibilities that comes with wearing the winged helmet.

At Michigan, beating Ohio State isn't just another game on the schedule, it's part of the program's identity.
