Buckeyes' Devin McCuin Makes the First Move in the Wide Receiver Room

It was clear inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center on Friday that the newest Buckeyes' wide receiver, Devin McCuin, was the dude of the day.
McCuin made a couple of big catches from Julian Sayin and, more importantly, showed that his speed and quickness will translate from UTSA to the big leagues of the Big Ten.
This is a welcomed occurance for the Buckeyes as this 2026 Training Camp is centered around finding the No. 2 wide receiver to Jeremiah Smith. Smith is going to be the best wide receiver in college football and arguably the best player.
The drop-off after him is significant, and it is critical that the Buckeyes find that No. 2 option. It was going to come from one of five players. The incumbent Brandon Inniss, either of the transfers McCuin or Kyle Parker, or two of the freshmen Brock Boyd or Chris Henry Jr.
McCuin made the first move.
Camp is long, and the reality is that you can't win a job without pads on, but you sure can lose it. He made big plays down the field on Friday, but also over the middle; he made a couple of catches in traffic that he turned into big plays with his speed.
Transfer safety Earl Little Jr. chimed in about the wideout saying, "he's a dog. He gets in and out of routes smoothly; he can block; he is physical at the point of attack."
McCuin was a star at UTSA. He played three seasons for the Roadrunners, appearing in a total of 32 games. Last year was his best year, as he hauled in 65 catches for 726 yards and eight touchdowns. Compared to last year's Ohio State team, those numbers would have been above Carnell Tate in catches and in the same neighborhood for yards and touchdowns.
The only question for McCuin is if his game translates from the American Conference to the Big Ten. Over his career, he has only played three games against non-Power 4 opponents. Those teams were Tennessee, Texas, and Texas A&M. In those contests combined, he has just 15 catches for 95 yards and zero scores.
Now, there are a lot of variables in those types of games, but he is unproven at this level.
The Buckeyes are on a mission to figure out if he has what it takes at the Big Ten level. If he can hang with this competition, then he could be the perfect sidekick for Jeremiah Smith.
In his second time against one of the best defenses in the country, he tore them up.
