By the Numbers: Key numbers that stand out from Ohio State’s 59-3 win over Kent State

Ohio State handled its business Saturday against Kent State, beating the Golden Flashes, 59-3.

Winning by eight touchdowns is impressive. That said, we may not have learned anything new or groundbreaking about the Buckeyes beyond what we already knew.

It was a record-setting day for Jeremiah Smith, though, even though he didn’t find the end zone. Smith broke one of three big receiving records in Ohio State history, and we’ll highlight all of that and more in this week’s edition of By the Numbers.

Jeremiah Smith is now the all-time Buckeyes’ leader in receiving yards with 2,958. Smith caught five passes for 85 yards against Kent State, averaging 17 yards per reception.

The Ohio State superstar wide receiver is now just 182 receiving yards away from the top 10 in receiving yards in Big Ten history. Wisconsin’s Jared Abbrederis is currently 10th with 3,140 yards.

With nine games remaining in the regular season, Smith is just 830 receiving yards away from breaking the Big Ten record for receiving yards. Purdue’s John Standeford currently holds that record with 3,788.

Smith caught five passes on Saturday. That means, at 184 receptions in his career, he needs just 22 to break Emeka Egbuka’s Ohio State career record. Smith is seven receptions behind David Boston’s 191.

It doesn’t matter who you’re playing. Anytime you hold an opposing offense to just 134 total yards, you’re doing something right on defense. That’s what Ohio State did to Kent State.

In addition to holding the Golden Flashes to just 134 total yards, the Buckeyes limited Kent State to six first downs and 71 rushing yards. Kent State was also 4-of-16 on third downs.

The Buckeyes only averaged 3.8 yards per rush on Saturday. Going into Big Ten play, that number definitely needs to increase against the rugged Big Ten.

That said, Ohio State only punted once against Kent State.

The Buckeyes had 14 total drives, with eight resulting in touchdowns. Two of the Buckeyes’ drives ended in turnovers on downs, and another two resulted in interceptions. Neither interception came from Julian Sayin, though.

Sayin was also sacked only once.
