BYU’s only flaw last season was Texas Tech. It played the Red Raiders twice, lost both games, and was left out of the College Football Playoff because of it.

There’s no Texas Tech this year, the schedule is difficult, but not bad for a team with playoff dreams, and there’s a whopper of a battle against Notre Dame in the middle of it all.

The Good

There aren’t two road games in two straight weeks, and most of the toughest games are at home. Three of the five road dates are against teams that didn’t go bowling, the team only leaves Utah twice after October 3rd, and …

The Bad

The week off comes too early – it’s at the end of September – meaning the Cougars have to go nine straight weeks without a break. Playing Arizona in Week 2 is a massive early test without too much time to tune up – but at least it’s at home.

What Big 12 Teams BYU Will Miss

Colorado, Houston, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, West Virginia. It would’ve been nice to miss Arizona State or Arizona, but at least those two are home games. Not playing Texas Tech and Houston is wonderful, but four of the teams missed – granted, Kansas State was by choice – didn’t go to a bowl game.

BYU’s Best and Worst Case Scenarios in 2026

Best Case: The Cougars own Provo

The five road games are all interesting, but they’re mostly manageable. As long as the Cougars win their home games, everything else should work out fine.

Worst Case: The Cougars trip up early in the Big 12

There’s a loss to Arizona, at TCU, or both, and then the nasty part of the slate kicks in with nothing all that easy the rest of the way. There are at least two losses before dealing with Utah.
