BYU football has one of the best FBS records in past 30 games

The BYU Cougars have played outstanding over the last two-plus seasons. After coming up short of making last year's College Football Playoff, Kalani Sitake's team is ready to take the next step.

As it stands now, BYU has the second-best record in the nation over the past 30 games. They're 26-4 over that time with two losses in each of the past two seasons. Just as good as Sitake and the Cougars have been, Curt Cignetti and the Indiana Hoosiers are riding a 19-game winning streak at 28-2. This includes a 29-23 victory over Northwestern on Friday night.

With the Hoosiers at the top and the Cougars as the runner-up, the duo are joined by Notre Dame, Oregon and Georgia in the top 5. What makes this more interesting is BYU is the only one who has yet to make the Playoff.

Indiana and BYU are the only college football teams with under five losses in the past 30 games. When you consider both teams and what makes them two of the best, coaching is a major factor. There are similarities between the two programs. Neither one of them is spending NIL above and beyond like many others around the country. However, money doesn't equate to success all the time.

What Cignetti has been able to do with the Hoosiers is the model most other programs should follow. To take a team traditionally known for being in the middle of the pack in the Big Ten and raise them up to a national contender is astonishing. Cignetti has made a career out of turning mid-majors into contenders with very little resources.

Sitake is no different. The only difference is he has stayed connected to the Beehive State and landed at BYU. Just five years ago, the Cougars weren't a national threat. Now they're projected to be in the College Football Playoff. For Sitake to stay in Provo and try to take his alma mater to new heights is rare in the current landscape of college football. He deserves to be included in the conversation of the best active coaches.

When Penn State tried to pull Sitake from BYU, he opted to stay and create a path to being mentioned in the same breath as his mentor, LaVell Edwards, who will forever be known as a BYU legend. The Cougars have a solid foundation in place to grab the attention of the rest of the nation.
