BYU vs Texas Tech: 2025 Big 12 Championship Prediction

This isn’t your uncle’s Big 12 Championship.

At one time, this was the game that stopped the world. It determined national titles, Heismans, and was the biggest game on the block, starting with an epic Texas shocker over Nebraska, highlighted early on by a Kansas State gag to Texas A&M, and continued with big moment after big moment.

This thing was owned by Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Texas, with Colorado and Kansas State playing huge roles.

There will be a sixth different winner in six years – Oklahoma, Baylor, Kansas State, Texas, and Arizona State before this – but this time around, as the saying goes, it just means more.

It’s been for show over the last several years, with the Big 12 usually on the outside looking in with the College Football Playoff. The Texas win in 2023 changed the season – and knocked out Florida State – and last year, it was a true play-in playoff game between Arizona State and Iowa State.

This year, as the saying goes, it just means more.

These two played a few weeks ago – Texas Tech won 29-7Texas Tech is looking to show the world that it really is a player in the national championship chase. It’s safely in the CFP, but there’s a chance for the Big 12 to get two teams in if BYU can pull off the upset.

Texas Tech has never played in a Big 12 Conference Championship. It hasn’t won a title of any time since the 6-6 1994 team tied for the Southwest Conference championship, and hasn’t won anything outright since taking the 1955 Border Conference.

BYU was a Mountain West powerhouse, winning the 2006 and 2007 championships under Bronco Mendenhall.

Why BYU Will Win

The Cougars aren’t getting any love for its 11-1 record.

It’s on the outside of the College Football Playoff looking in, and it almost certainly has to pull this off to get in. On a three-game winning streak, it’s been dominating everyone since the loss to the Red Raiders a month ago.

No, it’s not as dynamic as Texas Tech, or as exciting, but it’s ultra-efficient. Outside of the three turnovers against the Red Raiders, the offense has given it up once in five of the last six games.

The offensive line is a rock, the offense is well-balanced, and all of it has to lead to more productive drives this time around.

The Cougars do just about everything right, and that includes owning third downs. As long as they’re converting, they’re rolling, and they didn’t do that against the Texas Tech defense.

The running game went bye-bye, but the pass protection was good enough. Bashing away with the ground game from the start is a must, time of possession is everything, and …

Why Texas Tech Will Win

The Texas Tech defense plays like it was shot out of a cannon. David Bailey, Romello Height, and the pass rush live in opposing backfields, and star linebacker Jacob Rodriguez takes care of everything else.

If you haven’t seen this bunch, just watch – it’s always swarming, and it turns things up several notches on third downs. All of it leads to lots and lots of forced mistakes.

The one time the defense didn’t force a takeaway was the loss to Arizona State, but there were other issues with quarterback Behren Morton out. Since then, the defense came up with 14 takeaways in the last five games, including the three against BYU.

It’s not a fast offense, but it operates with a quick pace. It doesn’t make a whole lot of mistakes, but the defense is there to clean them up when it does.

BYU vs Texas Tech Prediction, Betting Lines

Lots of things can be true here at once.

BYU really is that good. It’s getting totally blown off that it whacked Stanford with ease – the same Stanford that easily beat the Florida State team that took down Alabama.

Beating Utah wasn’t easy. Going 11-1 in a power conference is hard, and blowing out TCU, Iowa State, and even East Carolina was impressive. Yeah, it can control its own destiny here by beating Texas Tech and getting into the CFP, maybe as high as the four or five, but it really is deserving of more respect no matter what happens here.

That, and Texas Tech might really be that amazing.

It obliterated everyone but Arizona State, and even in that, it came up with a terrific gut-check comeback attempt that fell just short.

Yeah, the Red Raiders are (almost certainly) in, but that’s not enough. Not only is this a chance at the first outright conference title in over 70 years, but a win would make it the first 12-win season in the program’s history.

The Red Raiders will be impressive.
