BYU vs Texas Tech Prediction in What Might Be a Big 12 Title Preview
NCAAF College Football News, Photos, Stats, Scores, Schedule & Videos...
This might be the first of two, depending on how it goes.
BYU is ranked. seventh in the first round of the College Football Playoff rankings. It’s one of just four unbeaten teams, with a strong win at Utah among four road wins in the last six games. But the respect isn’t there quite yet.
That changes if it can pull this off. There’s still work to do with TCU and at Cincinnati up next before closing out with UCF.
Texas Tech has been fantastic, with the only blip a loss at Arizona State in a great fight. Eighth in the CFP rankings, win this, and with UCF and at West Virginia to close, it’s not a lock, but 11-1 and a spot in the playoff will be there for the taking.

Why BYU Will Win
Texas Tech feasts on mistakes, turning games into routs with a great pass rush that’s screwing everyone up.
The Cougars aren’t screwing up.
They might not be as exciting, but they can come up with the offensive pop that Texas Tech brings. And most importantly, they don’t turn the ball over.
There was a blip when the Cougars gave it up five times in back-to-back wins over West Virginia and Arizona, but there’s been a grand total of one turnover against everyone else.
This is a blocking-and-tackling BYU team. The defense is fantastic on third downs, the ground attack pounds away for well over 200 yards per game, and …. it’s third in the nation in turnover margin. However …
Why Texas Tech Will Win
Can BYU handle the pass rush and playmaking talent from the Texas Tech defense?
The Cougars only faced one pass rush that’s close to as good as what the Red Raiders bring, and the passing game had the worst performance of the year in the close call against Utah.
They’ve been able to find ways to win, but it all revolves around the ground game that’s used to handing it off 40 times a game – it did that in five of the eight games.
No one has come all that close to 40 carries, and that’s because the Red Raiders have only allowed more than two yards per carry four times, and they’ve only given up more than 3.5 yards per pop once.
BYU vs Texas Tech Prediction, Betting Lines
All things can be true at once.
BYU is the real deal. The defense is as nasty as it gets in key moments, and the line has the toughness to smash away a bit. But at the same time, Texas Tech is playing at another level.
Arizona State pitched a near-perfect game – it was the only time all year Texas Tech didn’t generate a turnover – to pull off the home win, and that was when the Red Raiders didn’t have Behren Morton under center.
The Cougars will be great for about a half, and then Texas Tech’s efficiency and defensive explosion will kick in.
