BYU football quarterback Bear Bachmeier delivered an outstanding all-around performance against Notre Dame, helping the Cougars maintain their unbeaten record. However, the victory meant more than just another team achievement for the star quarterback. It was also a personal and emotional win for Bachmeier, who finally got the better of a program that he felt had disrespected him and his family during his high school years.
During the postgame press conference, Bachmeier was asked about the significant win and did not hesitate to reveal the personal motivation behind his performance
“It’s great, man,” Bachmeier said. “Yeah, I call anyone like this because I’m talking about myself. But out of high school, Notre Dame disrespected me and my family pretty badly, and I wasn’t going to lose to those guys. There was no way I was going to lose those guys.”

According to ESPN Analytics, Notre Dame had just a 0.04% chance of losing entering the day. However, BYU pulled off the upset and defied the odds.
The win marked BYU’s first victory over Notre Dame since 2004 and secured the Cougars’ second-ever win against a top-two opponent in program history.
Bachmeier completed 23 of 36 passes for 224 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 45 yards and two scores on 13 carries. He also caught two touchdown passes, becoming the first quarterback in BYU history to record both a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown in the same game in last 30 years.
BYU will look to build on the momentum from this statement victory as it continues its push for a College Football Playoff berth. If Bachmeier and the Cougars can sustain this level of performance, they will have good reason to believe they can compete against the nation’s top teams throughout the rest of the season.
