Cal transfer LB, Clemson signee Luke Ferrelli re-enters NCAA transfer portal

Clemson signee Luke Ferrelli has re-entered the NCAA transfer portal, On3 has learned. Ferrelli committed to Clemson on Jan. 6 — the second player to commit to Dabo Swinney’s squad during 2026 the portal cycle.

Ferrelli played for Cal last season. After redshirting in 2024, Ferrelli exploded onto the scene in 2025 as the San Diego native played in all 13 games, recording 91 tackles, five TFL, one sack, one interception, two pass deflections. He earned ACC Defensive Freshman of the Year and an All-ACC honorable mention honors as a result.

Prior to enrolling at Cal, Ferrelli was ranked as a three-star prospect and the No. 1,413 overall player in the 2024 class, according to the Rivals Industry Rankings, which is a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services. He was the No. 134-ranked LB in his class and the No. 103 overall player from the state of California, hailing from Carlsbad.

Before re-entering the portal, he was a part of the No. 14 transfer portal class in the country at Clemson. The Tigers don’t have a storied history in the transfer portal, but Ferrelli appeared to be one of the crown jewels of the class.

Now, he’s off to find a new home in college football. He visited Ole Miss even after his commitment, which isn’t unheard of. Still, he remained committed to Clemson until now.

For Clemson, the Tigers are coming off a season with College Football Playoff aspirations. However, this wouldn’t pan out with Clemson finishing with a 7-6 record. They ended their season with a 22-10 loss to Penn State in the Pinstripe Bowl, but finished the regular season with four-straight wins to become bowl eligible.

While 2025 didn’t go as planned, Clemson will likely enter the 2026 season with high expectations. Only, Ferrelli won’t be a part of those efforts anymore.
