Purdue football went all the way to California to land its first defensive commitment in the 2027 class.

Huntington Beach defensive back Gianni Porfilio announced his commitment to the Boilermakers on Thursday. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound senior-to-be is a three-star prospect ranked No. 1,222 nationally in the Rivals industry rankings.

Porfilio chose Purdue over several offers on the west coast, including Arizona, Washington State and Oregon State.

According to 247Sports, Porfilio recorded 22 tackles, two interceptions and two forced fumbles last season for Mount Miguel High School in Spring Valley, California. He also produced 86 yards and a touchdown on seven receptions as a receiver.

The Boilermakers' previous three prospects in the 2027 class were all offensive players — Winnetka (Illinois) New Trier quarterback Jackie Ryder, Bastrop (Texas) receiver Dallas Crescenzo and Chaminade-Madonna Prep (Florida) running back Amos Bradford.

Purdue's 2026 signing class was heavy on defensive backs, with six of 25 high school or junior college signees coming from the secondary. Porfilio also further expands the program's California presence, following 2026 freshman quarterback Corin Berry from Covina (California) Charter Oak.
