Cam Williams Brings A Different Skillset To Notre Dame's Receiving Corps

Like most things, the truth about Notre Dame's wide receiving corps is somewhere in between 'championship-caliber' and 'not good enough.' In 2024, the Irish were a run-heavy offense featuring quarterback Riley Leonard and the star studded duo of Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price. They didn't have a single receiver in the regular season record a 100-yard game leaving many questioning what it would look like in the postseason. Thankfully, receivers Jordan Faison and Jaden Greathouse put a lot of that speculation to rest with their performances in the 2024 College Football Playoffs.

This past season, Notre Dame's receiving corps had a solid season. For the first time since 2021, they have a receiver finish with over 600 yards receiving and just to add the icing on the cake, they had two players in Faison and Virginia transfer Malachi Fields eclipse that mark.

Offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock is one of the best in the business, and he's done a great job tailoring his offenses to the skillsets he has on the roster. With CJ Carr returning under center, I expect this offense to be more vertically oriented and the pass game being used as the primary driver instead of a compliment to a stout rushing attack. But there's one thing the offense has been missing the last couple of seasons: a true deep threat that can take the top off of the defense on a weekly basis. That's where rising redshirt sophomore Cam Williams enters the conversation.

The Irish have brought in several talented transfers to South Bend over the last three years. In 2024, they brought in Beaux Collins from Clemson, Kris Mitchell from Florida International and Jayden Harrison from Marshall. Last season, they brought in Fields from Virginia and Will Pauling from Wisconsin. This past winter, they brought in Mylan Graham and Quincy Porter from Ohio State. But through all of that, Williams remained the most physically gifted player in the room.

Williams is a 6-2, 200-pound receiver with legitimate track speed who has day one to day two NFL talent, but he has yet to break out. He's still relatively young in his playing career, but he's now heading into his third year with the program. With the talent they attracted in the portal this season and the quick ascension of the 2026 recruiting class flashing this spring, the time for Williams is now.

The Illinois native has a skillset combination that nobody else in the room possesses. His size combined with his elite level speed makes him a matchup nightmare for opposing secondaries. He took a massive step forward this spring, but will have to build on that throughout summer workouts and into fall camp.

The task for Williams is simple: continue building on the foundation you laid this spring. Keep learning from the older players in the room like Faison and Greathouse and continue taking the next step. For the Notre Dame offensive coaching staff, their goal is to find a role for him. Williams has way too many physical tools to be sitting on the sidelines this season. They have to find a role for the 6-2 speedster in this year's offense because he brings a skillset to the table that nobody else in the room has.
