Can Georgia Get Back To The National Championship?

Winning the SEC once is difficult. Winning it twice in a row is even harder.

Now Georgia has a chance to make it three straight SEC championships — and that still might not be enough to satisfy expectations in Athens.

For Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs, 2026 is about getting back to the national championship.

Georgia once again has plenty of talent, but this roster looks different from some of Smart’s previous juggernauts. The Bulldogs will lean heavily on veteran quarterback Gunner Stockton, who enters the season with an experienced offensive line and several new weapons around him.

The biggest question might be wide receiver.

Georgia added Isiah Canion and veteran London Humphreys through the portal, while CJ Wiley, Sacovie White-Helton and several talented young receivers will have opportunities. At running back, Nate Frazier returns alongside Chauncey Bowens and transfer Dante Dowdell.

But Georgia’s identity under Smart has always started with defense.

KJ Bolden could become one of the best defensive backs in the country, while Gabe Harris Jr., Raylen Wilson, Chris Cole and Quintavius Johnson give Georgia plenty of talent throughout the front seven. The Bulldogs also added several transfers to an already deep secondary.

Talent won’t be the biggest concern.

The schedule might be.

Georgia gets No. 13 Oklahoma at home in September before traveling to No. 16 Alabama two weeks later. After the Florida game in Atlanta, the Bulldogs travel to No. 9 Ole Miss, then face Missouri, South Carolina and Georgia Tech to close the regular season.

There are potential land mines everywhere.

But that’s nothing new for Georgia.

The Bulldogs have reached a point where simply making the College Football Playoff isn’t the standard anymore. Smart has built one of the premier programs in college football, and after winning consecutive SEC championships, another trip to Atlanta should absolutely be the expectation.

The bigger question is what happens afterward.

Georgia hasn’t won the national championship since its back-to-back run in 2021 and 2022. For almost any other program, the success since then would be more than enough.

At Georgia, they’re chasing something bigger.

Three straight SEC titles would be historic. Getting back to the national championship would remind everyone that Kirby Smart’s dynasty isn’t going anywhere.
