LSU football is set to host one of the top-ranked players in the transfer portal on a visit: Former Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt.
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Leavitt’s visit to Baton Rouge is scheduled for Monday morning. The news comes after LSU missed out on former Cincinnati quarterback Brendan Sorsby, who committed to Texas Tech on Sunday night.
Leavitt was of interest to Texas Tech, too, but with Sorsby on board, Leavitt nixed his visit to Lubbock. At this point, it would appear that LSU’s top competition for Leavitt is Kentucky. The Wildcats were Leavitt’s first visit when the portal opened last week.
Per the On3 Transfer Portal rankings, Leavitt is the No. 1-ranked player in the transfer portal. He led Arizona State to the College Football Playoff in 2024, but injuries cut his 2024 season short. Leavitt is talented and a proven winner. He can make plays and would be a good fit for Lane Kiffin’s LSU offense.
Leavitt’s next stop will be his third school. Prior to joining Arizona State, he began his career at Michigan State.

Prediction: Leavitt lands at LSU
Reading the tea leaves, LSU looks to be well-positioned. The Tigers have been rumored as a potential destination for a few weeks now and if it’s LSU vs. Kentucky, I like the Tigers’ chances.
LSU needs a quarterback
LSU is down to zero scholarship quarterbacks after Michael Van Buren opted to enter the transfer portal. LSU will need to sign at least two transfers at the position. It’s LSU’s top need.
Kiffin and LSU OC Charlie Weis have a reputation for building strong offenses, but the Tigers need the right signal caller to do it. If LSU hits on a quarterback, the Tigers could be contending again faster than expected.
