This Week
I have yet to be perfect on my score prediction, which is truly what I’m trying to do.
Yes, it’s nice to see my score predictions be just four points off in Week One and eight points off in Week Two, but I’m not here for moral victories. I’m here to share the script with the world days before anything takes place on the field.
As of today, the rain is set to demolish South Bend on Saturday, especially at night. It won’t only soak Notre Dame Stadium for almost the entirety of the day, but by the time the game gets set to kick off at 7:30 p.m. EST, it looks like even more rain could be on the way.
However, Mother Nature is a fickle thing.
In Week One, I pushed hard for a first-half under in one of my betting articles due to a massive storm that was supposed to surround East Lansing. Then, as the game started, a literal citywide umbrella was put up by the football gods, and the game was played through a clear night.
I don’t see that happening this weekend.
And if the weather does hold up the way it is currently expected to, inclement weather is something that should be happily welcomed by the Spartans, as the rain could neutralize a very good Notre Dame team.
Without the weather, I don’t think I’d have enough courage to truly believe the Spartans could pull off the upset.
Even though Vegas has Notre Dame winning by almost 30 points, that spread is one I’d put my house on regardless of when or where this game would be played.
It’s a huge disgrace and criminally too high for the Spartans.
Michigan State may not be a championship-contending team right now, but Pat Fitzgerald has this team humming. He’s also instilled this “too young and dumb to care about how good the other teams are” mentality, providing a sense of confidence that has trickled down through every Spartan.
There’s a high likelihood this game gets into a battle of who can run the ball better and who can play defense better.
Though Notre Dame has a great defense — and a better one than Michigan State on paper — this game could ultimately come down to something as simple as how good everyone’s cleats are.
The same can be said about Michigan State and its bell-cow running back, Cam Edwards.
Edwards may be the best running back on the field Saturday night, but can he keep his footing?
Only time will tell.
But here’s what everyone has come here looking for.
A rain-soaked game between two very good teams.
One enters the night with championship expectations. The other enters with the mindset of playing spoiler every week of the season.
A rivalry for the Megaphone is being rekindled, and that’s something I think Pat Fitzgerald understands the importance of. He’s instilling that same mindset into his players.
Not a lot of people will predict a No. 3 team to lose.
But when the weather gets going, all bets are off the table. Rankings can mean as much as my daughter’s thank-you’s after tearing into a Christmas present.
Nothing.
