Can Michigan's New Staff Sway Five Star DL Tyzon Swann to Ann Arbor?

The modern college football recruiting landscape moves at lightning speed, but building a championship roster requires playing the long game. For the University of Michigan, that long game officially swings through Ann Arbor this June as the Wolverines prepare to host one of the most coveted underclassmen in the entire nation: 2028 five-star defensive lineman Tyzon Swann.

At 6-foot-4 and 245 pounds, the Indian Head, Maryland native is an absolute powerhouse for Henry E. Lackey High School. The recruiting industry has already taken notice of his historic production; as a sophomore, Swann put up eye-popping numbers, racking up 135 tackles, 50 tackles for loss, 16 sacks, and five forced fumbles. 247Sports and the 247Sports Composite both recognize him as the undisputed No. 1 defensive lineman in the country and a top-10 national prospect for the 2028 cycle.

The Current Landscape

While Michigan is officially locked in to host Swann for a crucial summer visit from June 13–14, they aren't currently sitting in the driver's seat. Looking at the broader picture, regional programs and perennial recruiting heavyweights have established strong early positioning.

Teams like Auburn, Florida, Maryland, and arch-rival Ohio State currently hold a "Warm" designation on his radar, while Michigan sits further back in the "Cool" category. SEC programs have done heavy lifting early on; Swann already made a pair of spring trips to Auburn to connect with defensive coordinator DJ Durkin, and he has praised Florida’s staff for their immediate connection. Furthermore, staying home is a strong option, with hometown Maryland making a significant push behind Mike Locksley.

With Michigan entering the battle from behind, their upcoming June visit represents a massive opportunity to shift the tide.

The New Staff Advantage

So, how does Michigan close the gap on a five-star defensive anchor who has the entire country chasing him? The answer lies in the fresh energy and philosophical shift of the Wolverines' newly assembled coaching staff.

Following a major coaching transition, Michigan hit a home run by hiring head coach Kyle Whittingham, an elite program builder renowned for maximizing defensive grit and developing trenches capable of dominating national competition. To specifically target the defensive line, Whittingham brought in defensive tackles coach Larry Black.

Coach Black arrives in Ann Arbor with immense momentum after serving as the defensive run game coordinator at Vanderbilt, where his unit finished 18th nationally in run defense. Known as a masterful technician and a high-energy recruiter, Black has a proven track record of helping develop future NFL talent during his career.

Most importantly, the new staff is already proving their ability to connect personally with elite talent. Current commits have already noted how naturally Coach Black and the new staff welcome recruits, prioritizing genuine personal connections over standard recruiting pitches.

Turning the Tide in Ann Arbor

When Swann steps onto campus in mid-June, Michigan's goal will be simple: move from "Cool" to "Warm" by showing him a blueprint for his future.

Michigan’s defensive line room currently features nine players on the roster and two commits, meaning the depth chart will be perfectly primed for a generational talent by the time the 2028 class arrives. Coach Black can offer Swann the chance to be the undisputed centerpiece of a re-imagined, aggressive defensive front under Whittingham’s leadership.

Swann has made it clear that his goal for summer visits is "just to go up there and see campuses and get a feel for it… see if that would be a great fit for me." With a pristine developmental track record, a brand-new coaching staff eager to make a statement, and a wide-open roster outlook, Michigan has all the ammunition necessary to completely change the trajectory of this recruitment before the summer concludes.
