So, I already ranked the teams, 1 to 40.

How am a feeling about the conferences? There are 10 playing in the Football Bowl Subdivision. As the season approaches, here is my list — in reverse order of course.

If you think I've lost my marbles with the order, let me have it at . Remember, I'm sensitive so please no digital booing if that is a thing.

3. Big 12 16

The Cougars

— Both of them, BYU and Houston. When quarterback Brendan Sorsby got ruled out at Texas Tech, the top of the conference was again up for grabs.

The Provo Cougars are considered a better team. at least according to Associated Press Top 25 voters. who ranked BYU No. 14 in the preseason and Houston No. 23.

— Both teams welcome back 11 starters. BYU has seven on defense and four on offense. Houston has six regulars back on defense and five on offense. The best of the bunch: Perhaps BYU running back LJ Martin. who was the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year in 2025 after running for 1,305 yards.

— At quarterback, the teams look even too. BYU's Bear Bachmeier. just a sophomore this season, hit 65 percent of his passes for more than 3,000 yards. He is only going to get better. Houston' Conner Weigman, a Texas A&M transfer, had fewer passing yards than Backmeier, but ran for 700 yards and 11 touchdowns. With his 25 TD passes that gave him 36 total. Checkmark to Houston.

Notre Dame at BYU, Oct. 17.

The best way to decide the BYU-Houston debate would be on the field. But they won't play unless they qualify for the Big 12 championship match Dec. 4 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. So, Cougars-Irish, with major College Football Playoff implications, will have to do.
